About Basketball Team Ratings

Offensive Rating (ORtg) measures how many points a team scores per 100 possessions. Defensive Rating (DRtg) measures how many points a team allows per 100 possessions. Net Rating is the difference between ORtg and DRtg. Pace estimates the number of possessions per 48 minutes. These are the most important team efficiency metrics used by NBA analysts and coaches.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good Offensive Rating?

In the NBA, the league average ORtg is typically around 112-114. Elite offenses score 118+ (top 5), while poor offenses are below 110. A rating of 120+ is championship-level offense.

What is a good Defensive Rating?

Lower is better for DRtg. League average is around 112-114. Elite defenses allow 108 or fewer points per 100 possessions. A DRtg below 105 indicates a truly dominant defensive team.

How is Pace calculated?

Pace estimates possessions per 48 minutes using the formula: 48 × ((Team Possessions + Opponent Possessions) ÷ (2 × Minutes Played ÷ 5)). This standardizes for game length and gives a per-48-minute rate.

Can I use this for college or high school basketball?

Yes! Just change the minutes to 40 for NCAA/college or 32 for high school. The formulas work the same across all levels.
