About ERA Calculator

Earned Run Average (ERA) is the most widely used statistic for evaluating pitchers in baseball and softball. It represents the average number of earned runs a pitcher allows per nine innings pitched. The formula is: ERA = (Earned Runs × 9) / Innings Pitched. A lower ERA indicates better pitching performance. At the MLB level, an ERA below 3.00 is excellent, 3.00-4.00 is good, and above 5.00 is considered poor. This calculator also handles partial innings by recording additional outs (1 out = 1/3 inning). All calculations happen in your browser — no data is sent to any server.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is ERA calculated?

ERA is calculated as (Earned Runs × 9) / Innings Pitched. For example, if a pitcher allows 3 earned runs in 6 innings, their ERA is (3 × 9) / 6 = 4.50.

What is a good ERA?

In Major League Baseball, an ERA below 3.00 is excellent, 3.00-4.00 is good, 4.00-4.50 is average, and above 5.00 is considered poor.

What are earned runs vs unearned runs?

Earned runs are runs that score without the help of an error or passed ball. Unearned runs result from defensive errors and are not counted in ERA. Only enter earned runs in this calculator.
